What is your opinion about naming your son after the father, (i.e. junior)?

Personally i don't like it, In my in-laws side of the family there are 3 generations of Joe. Grandad Joe, Dad Joe and little Joe...how is a kid supposed to feel good being reffered to as little Joe all his life? I just think it is a pain in the neck when you can't just say JOe and everyone knows who you mean. Plus it is nearly always a son named after his dad but rarely a daughter named after her mother, the child is an individual and should be given it's own name, it is an extention of it's parents but it isn't a clone of one of them and shouldn't be named after them. It's a bit big headed of the parent to name their child after them - they get the surname anyway. That is just my opinion and i haven't intended to offend anyone.

It is fantastic if you and your spouse stay together. However, if there is divorce and hubby does not have anything to do with child, that would hurt the child.
Reply:Dumb, just plain old dumb.

Let the child grow up to be their own person not have to live up to, or live down, the reputation of a previous person.
Reply:My father went overseas to protect all of you talking right now. I am damn PROUD to carry his name and pray I can be half the man he is. Edward William Benes Jr.
Reply:They won't be called by the given name, so I don't see the point of giving them that name. The juniors are called a nickname or junior or their middle name or little [insert name here.] I love tradition, but it is better to carry on the father's name as a middle name. Just a thought.
Reply:It can get confusing!!
Reply:It must be a yanky thing, us limeys are innovative enough to think of different names for our children.
Reply:i think everyone should have there own name not someone elses its a part of you that makes you unqiue and theres only one of you in this world so why try and be someone else even if you didnt have say to begin with
Reply:Awful. And think of when the son gets older and starts receiving mail and telephone calls, you'd never know which one they were wanting. Also whenever I hear a name like 'John Junior', I think of very stupid people.
Reply:surely this will lead to a junior junior junior of Junior. Just say no. Stop the madness now. Give your kids sensible names like 'Satan' for a girl or 'Barbie' for a boy - then they have a genuine reason to hate you when they become teenagers.
Reply:its a good idea, the first born son in my whole family has the same first name, but they all have different nick names so it dont get confusing.
